Fell Pony Fast Facts…

Origin: Northern England in the Border Regions

Average height: 13.2 Hands (maximum 14 Hands)

Acceptable Colors: Black, Brown, Bay and Grey

Acceptable Markings: Small star, and white on or below hind fetlocks

General Conformation: Strong legs with emphasis on good flat bone, light to profuse feather on lower legs, ample mane and tail, hard blue hooves. Deep through girth, historical soundness in limb and hoof, appearance of general hardiness with neat pony head.

Movement & Character: Tireless, surefooted, hardy, thrifty. The trot, in particular, should be ground-covering and active with good impulsion, engaging the hock as opposed to dragging through the stifle.

Personality: Clever, Bold, Cheeky, Savvy, Kind, Willing, and Self-Preserving. Fells do not suffer fools or bulling lightly: they excel in respectful partnerships.

Historical Uses: Pack pony, transportation, farm work, shepherding, “snigging” (logging)

Common Modern Uses: Competitive and Pleasure Driving, Pleasure Riding, Trail Riding, Dressage, Traditional Work, Jumping, and Family Fun! Fell enthusiasts are always finding new activities to enjoy with their ponies.
