2003: Fell and native ponies in museum exhibit

Lexington, Kentucky, USA: Due to the hard work of Fell Pony Society and Conservancy volunteers, British rare breeds such as Fells, Dales, Exmoors, Highlands and Shires, have been on photographic display at the Kentucky Horse Park (KHP) in the gallery of the International Museum of the Horse (IMH).

Renowned American photographer, John S. Hockensmith, known best for his exquisite limited editions of the Kentucky Derby winners, visited "British Rare Breeds on Parade!" at the KHP in June of 2003 where he witnessed Conservancy volunteers present a show in which five breeds of Mountain and Moorland ponies and five British horse breeds were judged by British judges, likely a first time show event on American soil.

Hockensmith was greatly influenced by his exposure to the concept of rare breed conservation and was so inspired that he asked for and was granted special permission to photograph the horses and ponies on exhibit. The results profoundly changed his intended museum exhibit and subsequently many of these pieces were included in his display at the museum.

The exhibit, "Equine Form: Figurative & Abstract, a Celebration of Rare Breeds, Carriage Driving, and Equine Themes" opened April 21, 2004 and ran through September 6, 2004 at the IMH.

In conjunction with The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC), the Kentucky Horse Park (KHP) hosted a special rare breeds weekend June 20, 21, and 22, 2003. This weekend was part of the KHP's International Museum of the Horse's "All the Queen's Horses" Exhibit displaying art and artifacts that explored the rich equestrian heritage of England, Scotland and Wales.

Breeds such as the Cleveland Bay, Clydesdale, Hackney Horse, Shire, Suffolk Punch, Dales, Dartmoor, Exmoor, and Highland were included in the live demonstrations and parades. With an emphasis on education and preservation, two well-known British judges and authors, Clive Richardson and Sue Millard, presided over a schedule of lectures, clinics, and a educational British-style show designed to promote rare breeds. A full report of this event is now available.
